About EMDR and Somatic
About EMDR and Somatic Therapy

Somatic Therapy recognizes the deep connection between mind and body. Often, we can understand logically that a situation isn’t dangerous, yet our body continues to respond with fear, tension, or overwhelm. This disconnect can leave people feeling stuck or frustrated with traditional talk therapy. While talk therapy supports insight and self-awareness, it doesn’t always address the body’s protective responses. Somatic therapy helps bridge this gap by working directly with these physiological reactions, supporting both emotional and physical well-being.

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a form of somatic therapy that uses bilateral stimulation—such as eye movements or alternating sounds—to help process and release unresolved memories and emotions. This approach supports the integration of cognitive understanding with felt experience, allowing disturbing images, physical sensations, and limiting beliefs to soften and resolve. EMDR is a well-researched, evidence-based treatment and is widely recognized for its effectiveness in treating PTSD.

Because EMDR can accelerate the healing process, many people experience relief from long-standing emotional and physical responses more quickly than with talk therapy alone. EMDR is also effective for smaller or cumulative traumas that contribute to anxiety, depression, phobias, low self-esteem, creative blocks, and relationship difficulties. As these patterns are processed and released, individuals often report feeling more grounded, open, and connected.

Couples Therapy
Relationship Therapy

Relationships of all types can benefit from guidance in recognizing and resolving conflicts. The main purpose of couples therapy is to offer a neutral, supportive space to help you understand what's happening in your relationship. My goal is to unlock your ability to make thoughtful decisions together, guide you toward more productive communication, and foster greater empathy, especially during conflict. I specialize in working with couples healing from trauma and have experience managing betrayal recovery (such as infidelity), separation, and reunification.

I believe that couples can improve their understanding of one another by exploring the dynamics, both positive and negative, that shape their relationship. Progress is best achieved when partners have a safe, reliable guide to help navigate these complexities. In therapy, my responsibility is to the relationship itself, ensuring both partners receive equal time, attention, and understanding.

My clinical approach is eclectic, and informed largely by the PACT (Psychobiological Approach to Couples Therapy) model, which offers unique benefits, including:

  • Moment-to-moment attunement: In the PACT approach, both the therapist and the couple focus on subtle shifts in facial expressions, body language, and tone of voice. This heightened awareness helps partners learn to respond to each other more attentively, especially in moments of conflict. By tuning into these signals, couples develop the ability to manage and de-escalate tension, even when they're alone together, fostering healthier interactions and deeper understanding.

  • Real-time problem-solving: During PACT sessions, the therapist recreates scenarios similar to those causing conflict in the relationship, guiding the couple through these challenges as they occur.

  • Fewer sessions: PACT often leads to quicker results, typically requiring fewer sessions than traditional couples therapy.

Adjunctive EMDR
Adjunctive EMDR

We’ve all experienced those moments in therapy where progress feels stalled or you seem stuck in a loop, especially when dealing with lingering issues from past trauma or negative experiences. It can be frustrating for both you and your therapist. That’s where I come in—through EMDR therapy, I specialize in breaking through those plateaus and targeting specific memories, body sensations, or limiting beliefs that may have been holding you back. By directly addressing these challenges, EMDR can accelerate the progress of traditional therapy and help overcome those “stuck” moments, enhancing the client’s and the primary therapist’s work together.

Adjunct EMDR therapy doesn’t replace or disrupt your ongoing therapy; instead, it complements and supplements the primary therapeutic relationship. By collaborating closely with your primary therapist, I ensure that EMDR is paced in a way that’s comfortable and effective, while avoiding redundancy in treatment. Success is achieved through clearly defined goals for EMDR, which I establish in partnership with both the client and their primary therapist.

I’m passionate about working with primary therapists and their clients to achieve deeper, faster healing. If you’re ready to take your therapy to the next level with adjunctive EMDR, I’d love to hear from you. Feel free to reach out directly or ask your current therapist for a referral.

Consultation
EMDR Consultation

I offer clinical consultation for therapists who are independently licensed and working with individuals and couples/relationship systems. I have particular expertise in dissociative disorders, including dissociative identity disorder, as well as disorders of unknown etiology (e.g. seizures, fainting, memory loss). I consult from a trauma-informed and attachment-focused perspective, and consultation with me will support your professional development in the areas of EMDR, couples/relationship dynamics, case conceptualization, and understanding of theory and technique as it applies to a particular case.

For those seeking EMDRIA supervision and consultation, I am an Approved Consultant and am able to provide up to all 20 hours of supervision required for EMDRIA certification. I strive to make consultation safe, shame-free and fun, so you can be curious in your learning and feel energized, supported, and refreshed.
